    Frequently asked questions

    Is this tool free?

Yes. There are no limits, watermarks or accounts.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression happens in your browser using the Canvas API, so files stay on your device.

    Will the image lose quality?

JPEG is lossy, but at quality 70 to 85 most photos look the same to the eye while shrinking a lot.

A JPEG compressor that stays on your device

Most online compressors upload your photos to a server, process them there and send them back. TheCompressJPEG does the work inside your browser using the same image engine that displays web pages. That makes it fast, it works offline once loaded, and your pictures are never stored anywhere.

Three ways to make a JPEG smaller

Lower the quality. Between 70 and 85, most photos look unchanged at normal size while losing a large share of their weight. Set a target size. Type a limit such as 100 KB and the tool finds the best quality that fits. Reduce the width. A 4000 pixel phone photo rarely needs to be more than 1600 to 2000 pixels on screen, and halving the width removes three quarters of the data.

    Built for real upload limits

Job portals, visa forms, marketplaces and email all have size caps. The size-specific tools below are preset for common limits, from 10 KB signatures to 1 MB photos, in 20 languages.
