    Frequently asked questions

    Is this tool free?

Yes. There are no limits, watermarks or accounts.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression happens in your browser using the Canvas API, so files stay on your device.

    Will the image lose quality?

JPEG is lossy, but at quality 70 to 85 most photos look the same to the eye while shrinking a lot.

When you need a file under 20 KB

Upload forms, email limits and page-speed budgets often come with a hard size cap. This page is preset to 20 KB: drop in a photo and the compressor searches for the highest quality that fits, shrinking dimensions only if quality alone is not enough. The result is the best-looking image that still passes the limit.

How big can a 20 KB image be?

File size depends on content as much as pixels. A plain background compresses far better than leaves or gravel. As a rough guide for a 4:3 photo at 20 KB:

    QualityApprox. widthUse
    85~330 pxSharp detail, larger file
    75~413 pxBalanced default
    60~516 pxSmall previews and thumbnails

These figures are estimates. The tool always reports the exact size of every file it produces.

Tips for hitting 20 KB cleanly

Crop to the subject first, so pixels are spent where they matter. Avoid re-compressing a file that has already been compressed, because artefacts stack. If a portal also lists a pixel range, set the maximum width to match it before compressing. Aim slightly below the limit, since some systems count 1 KB as 1000 bytes and others as 1024.
